The following prompts refer to the On the Media podcast Snap Judgments (http://www.onthemedia.org/episodes/2010/05/28) and the related materials (images, linked articles, etc.)

Please respond to one prompt and to two classmates. Your responses are due by the end of the day Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Best practice is to type your posts in Word (or something similar) to proofread and check spelling before posting.

Your responses should be thoughtful, respectful, 100-200 words each. Explain why you believe what you believe. Make reference to the article(s) and images (and/or outside materials) to support your statements.

1. Martin Schoeller says: “I think there has been a long tradition in portrait photography where photographers try to capture a person’s personality rather than feeling obliged in trying to make them look good.”

Do you believe that a portrait photographer has an obligation to make his/her subject look good, or is it more important to try to portray the essence of the subject’s personality? Is your answer true for every context for the picture (magazine cover, company annual report, yearbook picture, wedding picture…)?

2. Jim Lewis writes: “The power of the photographer over his or her subject is immense.” What do you think of Jill Greenberg’s techniques with reference to Lewis’ statement? Are the techniques she used to produce her images of crying youngsters acceptable? Why or why not? Is your answer true for every type of photo that might be created using these types of techniques?

3. Following her cover shoot of John McCain, Jill Greenberg edited and posted harshly critical, satirical images of McCain on her web site. Greenberg defended her right to do so by saying: “I do the job that’s asked of me that day, and what I do beyond that is not really anyone’s business.”

The video: Ethics in Computing – Real Ethics and Virtual Reality (http://lutube.leeds.ac.uk/avsmas/videos/2060) by David Felber, introduces a number of ethical questions about the use of Manchester Cathedral in the video game Resistance: Fall of Man.

Please respond to two of the following questions. Spelling, grammar and civility count. After you have posted your responses, respond to two of your classmates. You must sign your posts.

Your answers should be 100-300 words long, thoughtful and should include your thought process. Why do you believe what you believe?

Should uses of actual places in video, video games and uses of places in printed work (books, graphic novels) be held to the same ethical standards? Why or why not? What should those ethical standards be?

Did Sony need permission from Manchester Cathedral to use the likenesses of the Church as a game setting? Why or why not?

The Dean of the Church, the Very Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender, claims that the Church is a sacred building. What does he mean by this statement? Is any building sacred in the way that he means this? Why or why not?

Richard Stanton of the video game company Edge states that there MAY be a difference between someone like one of the Columbine shooters who made video game levels of his school for use in a violent game, and a company like Sony using the cathedral. (Stanton does not take a position either way.) Is there a difference? If it is ok for Sony to use Manchester Cathedral, is it also ok for someone to make and post virtual levels of his/her hometown or school in a shooter game? Does it matter if the enemies/villains are aliens and not humans? Why or why not?

The Very Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender of Manchester Cathedral claims there should be no ethical distinction between virtual desecration of the cathedral (in a video or game) and tangible (real) desecration of the cathedral. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Kevin Kelly’s Original Post (Better than Free) is found here:

http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2008/01/better_than_fre.php

Kelly suggests that we will pay for things that we could obtain for free. Have you ever paid for something that you could have gotten for free? If you have never paid for something you could have gotten for free, use an example from somewhere or someone else.

Explain the circumstances.

what and when was the purchase?

why did you chose to pay for the item?

which, if any, of Kelly’s eight (8) generatives are illustrated by your example.

are there any other ‘generatives’ at work in your example that Kelly didn’t think about? if so, explain.

Application

Give another example of something where giving away all or part of the item could lead to a profitable business model.

What product or service could be given away (or partially given away).

What could then be added as value (sold)?
